Mixed Media / Exploring Possibilities

S e p t emb e r 2 0 - 2 8

Those of you who are familiar with the work

of Vince Tutton realise that, as well as

respecting the importance of developing skills

in the use of a single medium, he finds the

use of combinations of pencil, charcoal,

chalk pastel, gouache, acrylics, photographs

and writing the ideal vehicle for his present work.

The intention of this workshop is to allow

participants to explore the many possibilities

offered by such media. Introductory experimental

sessions will be offered to encourage the use

of the media in ongoing personal explorations.

Vince fully expects that some of you may prefer

to concentrate on the use of just one drawing or

painting technique to develop your ideas.

Appropriate tuition will be provided for this.

Vince Tutton has taught in secondary school,

Colleges of Further Education, Community Art,

Therapy in Hospital. 1986/7 he was awarded the

Fulbright Scholarship, USA/UK Exchange Programme,

Miami and 1994/5 The Residency in

Painting at Foundation Valparaiso, Spain.

Vince has exhibited his work widely in the UK and

abroad. His work can be seen on the website:

The Elements of Painting

J u n e 7 - 1 5

Tony will address the different kinds of language

used in making a painting. “The canvas is flat, the

world 3-dimensional.” This essential difference

brings into play the use of 'language'. “I don't

dictate the language but encourage recognition of

a fact that a language is used. This is not the same

as learning 'technique' as it is an over-arching attitude

to the activity rather than a series of practical

matters. Certain basic elements need to be considered:

Tonal truth, inventive colour, use of different

weights of paint, attention to 'touch' and to 'edge'.

If all this sounds 'difficult' and not suited to the

needs of the beginner, it is not. Inexperienced and

very experienced artists continue to work together

in my classes to the benefit of both.”

Tony studied at The Slade and was later a lecturer

there. He has taught at various London Art

Schools including The Byam Shaw, Wimbledon and

Heatherleys and continues to teach at University of

the Arts, Kensington and Chelsea College and he

gives private classes which are held at Heythrop

College, Kensington Square. Tony has had Solo

exhibitions at Jonathan Ross's Gallery 286, London

and group exhibitions include: RA Summer Exhibition,

Royal Society of Portrait Painters, "The Discerning

Eye"

Victoria Gamberoni

Exploring ways to Structure a Painting

S e p t e m b e r 6 - 1 4

Each morning Tor will discuss and advise on the

planning of work for the day and on occasion set an

exercise in either drawing, colour mixing or painting

and collage.

She will assist with the process of structuring a

painting, paying attention to the balance of

composition, the mixing and use of colour and tone

introducing different materials and techniques to

help with bringing paintings to fruition.

At the end of each day there will be a discussion.

Tor is a very popular tutor, her wisdom and gentle

guidance on the development of each individual

student is invaluable.
