3.Breaking news!!!!Sasol New Signature competition

The  New Signatures competition was established by the Association of Arts Pretoria in 1962 and has been sponsored by Sasol for the past 20 years.  This year’s competition will see a young South African artist winning a grand prize of R60 000.  The runner-up and five merit winners will receive R15 000 and R5 000 respectively.

The Sasol New Signatures Art Competition aims to assist emerging South African artists, who are 18 years and older and who have not had a solo exhibition, apart from an exhibition held for academic purposes, to become professional artists. As a large percentage of entrants are art students, the judges of the competition encourage artists to submit experimental and inspiring work.

As part of the entry process, artists are encouraged to attend one of the information sessions to be held nationwide. The sessions will be hosted by Peter Binsbergen, a highly acclaimed artist, previous finalist of the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition, and art instructor with 14 successful solo exhibitions to his name.

The information sessions will cover the competition’s history and logistics (including how to submit work via the internet), concepts and titles of works, presentation techniques, installations and working in different media. Individual attention will be given to proposals and technical problems dealt with.

“Every year, the competition becomes more challenging than ever, as the judges will be looking for artworks that demonstrate outstanding craftsmanship, creativity and innovation,” says Binsbergen.

Artists are invited to submit a maximum of two artworks at one of the eight collection points around the country or via the internet.  Physical entries must be submitted on Monday, 26 July 2010 and Tuesday, 27 July 2010 between 10:00 and 16:00 and online entries may be submitted from 1 to 27 July 2010 at www.sasolsignatures.co.za.

Regional judges will select approximately 100 works which will be exhibited at the Sasol New Signatures exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum from 8 September to 3 October 2010
